Introduction to Midwifery Course

This course is for you if:
*you have ever thought about what it would be like to be a midwife but not sure if it’s for you
*you are unsure of the type of midwife you want to become
*you have ever wondered what all the tests and procedures done during pregnancy and birth were for
* you are a doula that wants to learn more

Class 1: Examines the difference between traditional, naturopathic, direct-entry, certified professional and certified nurse-midwives. We will discuss some of the benefits of each as well as the usual training routes.  Other topics will include: homebirth issues, the realities of a career attending births, belief in the natural birth process, the art of midwifery, water birth, unassisted birth and guarding natural birth in a hospital setting

Class 2: Will cover prenatal basic skills, normal physiologic aspects of pregnancy, basic labs ordered in the antenatal period, available genetic screening tools and the appropriate use of technology in pregnancy, preventative care, and basic nutrition for pregnancy.

Class 3: Covers labor and delivery, normal labor physiology, emotional issues in labor, comfort measures, the role of doulas, aspects of fetal heart monitoring at home and in the hospital, special issues for VBAC women (vaginal birth after cesarean), breech and twin deliveries will be covered briefly, and the use of herbs and other natural preparations in labor, as well as issues relating to the placenta

Class 4: Understanding complications in labor and delivery, an overview of the more common variations of normal in labor; how to recognize them and what typical measures are taken in both the home and hospital environments to manage them, topics will include shoulder dystocia, post partum hemorrhage, malpresentation, fetal distress, assisted and operative delivery including how to make these situations less traumatic for mom and baby should they become necessary

Class 5: This class will cover the postpartum period from breastfeeding basics and troubleshooting, post partum depression signs and symptoms, local community resources for new mothers, birth control options and issues, and well woman care

Class 6: The course will conclude with a discussion of several actual cases, a look at what equipment midwives bring with them to births, a brief overview of the political and legal issues midwives currently face and the barriers to care presenting pregnant women today, this last class will likely go past the usual time as there will be a dessert buffet afterwards while we talk storyJ


This series consists of 6 consecutive weeks of 2 hour classes and costs $250.00
